Problems on Mt D

Mt D gets more than its usual share of abuse. There is the botanical form, induced by the original planting of trees by Adolph Sutro as part of his tree-farm-business-plan-gone-wrong. These trees are nearing the end of their expected lifespans, but they’re also inundated by tombstone-like encasements of ivy that chokes out the trees’ branches and leaves and exert huge forces during winds. These trees are well on their way toward dying.

Another problem on Mt D has been the recurring vandalism of the cross, owned by the Council of Armenian American Organizations of Northern California (to whom the City sold the immediate land around the cross after a long controversy). Recently the cross got tagged, yet again.
